Elementary Overview
Curriculum
The elementary teachers of Hope RCS are professionally trained, Reformed educators and implement biblical faith and worldview throughout their teaching. The curriculum used in the elementary school has been chosen carefully for its Christian perspective. Secular curriculum is used for Geography and History in Grade 7/8. Hope RCS also follows the academic and curricular guidelines provided by the
Ontario Ministry of Education. The elementary program has a strong focus on Language Arts in the primary grades, and Math from K-8. Bible and Church History are also taught every day in K-8. All of the programs of study are evaluated by the staff, Curriculum, and Education committees in a seven year cycle. Grades 3, 6, 9, and 12 students participate in yearly Canadian Tests of Basic Skills to monitor
student progress and to assist the staff and Education Committee in making curricular decisions. In addition to regular curriculum, special care is given to keeping our library stocked with appropriate and excellent books for all grade levels.
Education
Kindergarten to Grade 4 are separate classes as the students learn the foundational skills of reading and writing. Grades 5-8 are taught in split-grade classes, with the larger classes receiving support through Teacher Assistants. The core subjects (Math, Language Arts) are taught each year to the individual grades, while the rest of the subjects are taught in a two-year rotation.
Special Education
Hope RCS has a Special Education Resource Teacher that works closely with classroom teachers and Educational Assistants throughout the elementary school for students with exceptional learning needs.
